‘Soap Girl’(Soap Girl) [ 12/6/2002 ] A Story About a Korean Woman, Created by a Korean Director Directed by Korean filmmaker Young Man Kang, the movie has been described as a sexually appealing film featuring an ensemble cast of Asian American women. One day, Maya(Kerri Ryu), a Korean woman, visits a massage parlor in Hollywood while searching for a job. The massage parlor’s owner, Mama-san(Korean actress Tomiko Lee), provides Maya with revealing clothing, meals, and accommodation and hires her as a massage girl. Although the establishment outwardly presents itself as a massage parlor, it is actually a place where prostitution takes place. Initially the subject of curiosity among her coworkers, Maya gradually assumes a position in which she embraces and supports the other women. As Maya slowly falls in love with an unmarried poet in his 30s(Luciano Saber), her dark past is revealed. Through this process, she finally rediscovers her true identity. This entertaining soap opera particularly offers male viewers plenty of visual appeal, while the wide variety of characters visiting the massage parlor provides plenty of laughter. The film received the Best Asian American Feature Film Award and the Audience Award at this year’s Big Bear International Film Festival.
